In honor of International Women’s Day 2025, we reached out to a group of women from our Dynamic Boards NED Community to learn about their board careers, what they love most about their Non-Executive Director roles, and how we can collectively inspire more women to step into the boardroom.
In the next instalment of this blog series focusing on women on boards, we are shining a light on Christina Renner-Thomas, who is currently a Board Advisor for Acupuncture Academy and Non Executive Director/Trustee USA at Prostate Cancer Research.
Why did you become a NED / Chair?
I embarked on the journey of non executive directorships to bring my wealth of experience, strategic thinking and business acumen to guide the success of organisations without the focus on operational and managerial aspects of daily operations.
What do you enjoy about NED work?
I truly enjoy solving complex multi factorial problems and supporting the right environment to ensure organisations are well run.
What would you say to inspire more women to become NEDs?
The dynamics of a board are different when women are present. Early observations by the IMF in 2014 now supported by research show a decrease in excessive risk taking, an overall increase in an organisations’ reputation and sustainable performance. As 50% of the population we have a responsibility to contribute to sustainable governments and economies. Arrival through the C-suite still commands greatest influence, so board roles can be a path to secure the experience you need to land a seat in the c-suite.
What do you think is holding more women back from becoming NEDs?
What maybe holding some women back from taking on board roles is probably lack of awareness or undervaluing their executive experience.
